I switched out my earbuds for a pair of Sony's Fontopia MDR-EX71SL/WK earbuds. The cord for them is in two pieces. One that is short and then an extension that adds (or subtracts) about three feet. When I wear my shuffle around my neck, the cord is just long enough to reach without hanging out all over. This doesn't address the fact that you don't want to wear it around your neck, but it does help. :-) Not perfect, but an improvement on the “miles of cord”.
